A new community-driven effort is kicking off to make travel safer for everyone in Haines, whether you walk, bike, roll, drive, or ride.
The Haines Borough and Chilkoot Indian Association have teamed up to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan through the federal Safe Streets for All (SS4A) program, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. This plan will blend local knowledge with safety studies and crash data to pinpoint problem areas, set priorities, and guide real improvements that save lives. Just as importantly, having an SS4A-compliant plan will make Haines eligible for federal dollars that aren’t available to communities without one, enabling the Borough and its partners to competitively pursue funding for the design, construction, and implementation of the projects and policies identified in the plan.
But it starts with you, the people who use Haines’ roads every day. You’ll be invited to share your input through a Community Safety Survey, public events, and Borough meetings. We’re also forming a Steering Committee of community members to help shape the plan and ensure it reflects local values and needs.
The SS4A program’s ultimate goal is to eliminate roadway deaths and serious injuries by improving safety for all users: drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, mobility device users, public transit riders, emergency responders, and commercial operators alike.
The project is just getting underway, so stay tuned for opportunities to get involved. A project website is in the works, and updates will be shared on social media and around town. We’ll soon be seeking letters of interest from community members who want to serve on the Steering Committee.
